Quando la luna colpisce tuo occhio come una torta di pizza grande...

That's, obviously, amore.

So pizza is its own food group here in Italy, and Rome especially. You can casually traverse the city streets and run out of fingers counting the pizzerie you see. I'm actually not that big of a pizza fan back at home in the States, yet I am eating quite a lot of it here. It is definitely how they make it that changes my mind. Almost all pizza is thin, crispy crust which is better, to me, than the big deep dish fluffy crust we're so familiar with on the other side of the Atlantic. Also, at the by-the-slice places, the pizza is usually not round; instead, a long rectangle loaded (or not, depending on your preference) with toppings.

Friday night, the ladies (I'm sure by now you know who) and I went to Pizzeria da Remo, recommended by Katie Parla, a noted American food blogger stationed in Rome. They are known for their margherita, which we were very excited to try. We went rather early, or early for Italian time anyway, but we had an early Saturday morning so it was a one drink kind of night. Even though it was only 8, it was buzzing with Italians and tourists alike - we took the noise as a good sign. A gruff waiter threw a menu and pen on the table and so our night began!

the oddest menu - complete with no prices!

Mac is confused by this menu's tactics

fried zucchini flowers and three "peroni" (at least they were only 3 euros)

margherita and piazza bianca con prosciutto

waste not, want not!

The whole dinner was 28 euro and is definitely a place we'd be willing to stroll into again. Though we are still on the hunt for prosciutto and fig pizza before they're out of season! The weather seemed to have finally broken after Friday morning's rain, so we decided to walk back to our apartment. It became a two drink night when we went to the bar around the corner from us for a little night cap.

It was a good, casual Friday night, especially with the prospect of a Colonna vineyard tour and a visit to Lake Albano on our Saturday horizon. There, of course, will be a post coming with all the photos from that very soon. Today, however, has been a bit disheartening. The farmers' markets have been closed because it is Sunday, so we were forced back to the supermarket for this week's groceries. And now, Italian homework calls out to me, "ciao, ciao!" But all I want to say is "grazie, ma no grazie."

Alla prossima...
